Garbage Disposal
The City of Waverly garbage trucks pick up garbage once a week for residents. The trucks start collection at 7:00 a.m. each day. Please have your garbage out the night before or at least by 7:00 a.m. on your garbage day. Waverly is divided into 5 sections. If you are unsure as to the day your garbage is picked up, call the Public Services Division at 352-6247 (or 352-9065).
Placement of Garbage:
• Alley, if you have an alley, or
• Street curb next to your driveway, if you have no alley.
• Call Public Services at 352-6247 if you are not sure where your garbage should be placed.
Disposal Options:
There are 2 options for residents of Waverly to dispose of garbage:
1. Personal Garbage Container or Garbage Bag (garbage tag required). See info below.
2. City-owned garbage can (no garbage tag required). See info below. Service Request / Agreement
1. Personal Garbage Container ( Needs Garbage Tag ):

If you choose to use your own garbage container or garbage bags, you will need to place a purchased garbage tag on each can and/or bag. These containers or bags cannot be more than 33 gallons and weigh no more than 50 pounds each. If using a garbage container, place sticker on a top item in the container. Several small plastic grocery bags can be placed in a garbage container with one garbage tag placed on the top bag. If you place an extra bag of garbage outside or on top of your garbage container, you will also need to place a garbage tag on this bag. If you use a garbage container that is larger than 33 gallons, you will need to place 2 garbage tags on your garbage. Please note that you get more for your money if you use a 33-gallon container with one garbage tag.
If using garbage bag(s) without a container, place a tag on each bag. We suggest folding the sticker in half around the neck of the bag and sticking the ends of the tag together. This will ensure that it will stay on during cold and windy weather. Do not wrap the tag completely around the neck of the bag. Each tag has a white security strip that needs to be visible. The City’s garbage collectors need to verify that you have a whole tag on your bag. If your tag is totally wrapped around the neck of the bag, your garbage may not be picked up.
Always make sure that your garbage tag(s) is visible for the garbage collectors. Your garbage will not be picked up if there is no visible garbage tag.
Garbage tags can be purchased at:
o HyVee, 1311 4th Street SW
o Fareway, 222 West Bremer Avenue
o Casey's General Store, 1312 West Bremer Avenue
o Kwik Star (East), 400 East Bremer Avenue
o Kwik Star (West), 500 West Bremer Avenue
o Meyer Pharmacy, 110 10th Street SW
o Wal-Mart, 2700 4th Street SW
o Miller True Value, 1201 4th Street SW
o Walgreen's, 320 West Bremer Avenue
o City Hall, 200 1st Street NE
2. City-Owned Garbage Container ( No Garbage Tag Required ):

The City-owned garbage container does not require a garbage tag. The base rate on your utility bill will increase from $8.50 per month to one of the following below, depending on the size of garbage container. But remember, you would no longer need to purchase garbage tags.
$13.50 per month for a 35-gallon container (50 lb. weight restriction)
$19.50 per month for a 65-gallon container (95 lb. weight restriction)
Any extra bags of garbage that are placed outside of the container do require a garbage tag. No bags of garbage are to be placed on top of the container and the lids on these garbage containers must be fully closed.
The City shall repair or replace containers experiencing normal wear and tear. The citizen is responsible for the repair or replacement cost of the container when the damage is caused by neglect, such as a vehicle striking the container. (The current 2012 replacement cost is about $60.)
Contact Public Services at 352-6247 (412 1st Avenue SE) if you would like to use a City-owned garbage container. Or print out the Service Request / Agreement form. You may complete this form and drop it off at the Public Works Administration office in City Hall or you may place it in the City's drop box that is in the alley east of City Hall. If you are unable to pick up your garbage container, we can deliver it to your address. Please note that there is a limited supply of these containers and you may need to be placed on a waiting list.
The City strongly encourages all citizens of Waverly to continue to recycle as much as possible.
Disposal of Old Drugs & Needles:
Old or unused drugs should not be put in the garbage or flushed down the toilet. These drugs then end up in Iowa's ground water and rivers. Also, sharps and needles should not be placed in your garbage, as this is a serious danger to the garbage collectors and landfill operators. For proper disposal of old drugs & needles, please visit HyVee Pharmacy (352-2021), Meyer Pharmacy (352-3120), Walgreen Pharmacy (352-4257), Wal-Mart Pharmacy (352-2735) or Waverly Health Center's Center Pharmacy (483-4100).
Illegal Disposal of Garbage:
It is illegal to dump garbage on other property or to dispose of your garbage in a dumpster which is rented by someone else.
