February 16, 2008 Planning Committee Minutes
Only by understanding the needs of a community can a library focus on excelling in particular areas rather than providing many services poorly.  The goal of the Community Planning Committee members during their first session was to identify those community needs and at the end of the day to identify service responses the library may take on that will focus on meeting these needs.  A “service response” is what a library does for, or what it offers to, the public in an effort to meet a set of well-defined community needs.  They will further provide the focus required to manage the resources (staff, collections, facility, and technology) to support service priorities.

February 23, 2008 Staff Planning Minutes
Staff got together to conduct a SWOT analysis to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats of each of the preliminary service responses generated from the Community Planning Committee’s first session.  This SWOT analysis focused entirely on the point of view of the delivery of the services in fulfillment of the recommendations from the in-depth descriptions provided in the publication The New Planning for Results.

March 11, 2008 Board Planning Minutes
The Library Board of Trustees conducted SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analyses on the eight service responses generated by the first community planning meeting on Feb. 16th.

March 15, 2008 Planning Committee Minutes
The meeting concluded with the Community Planning Committee Members recommending that in addition to “Stimulate the Imagination” that the Library Board of Trustees also consider “Create Young Readers” and “Visit a Comfortable Place.”

The Community Planning Committee did an excellent job of identifying what is most likely to succeed given the Library’s resources available while also meeting some of the identified community needs.
