Director’s Message
Hello Waverly Golfers, Here is your 2010 update:
Another long and deep winter is over and we are talking Waverly Golf for 2010.
By the time you get this newsletter, the course may be open. If it’s not, it’s time to get the clubs out of the basement and get outside and start swinging.
The fees were frozen at the 2009 levels. The City Council decided the best way to keep golfers is to keep the rates reasonable. The hope is that the fees remaining the same will attract more golfers because the quality of the course at the current fee schedule is a great value.
This is an exciting time for the course as a whole. The two new holes may be opening this year. When the two new holes the course are opened, we will be renumbering the holes. The current front will become the back and obviously the back will become the front. #1 and #2 will remain the same. It will be like a new golf experience.
Other news:
- New trees are planned for the near and distant future. Staff is completing a tree replacement plan so that the character of the course remains the same after the ash and scotch pine trees are gone.
-Fees are the same as last year and are listed elsewhere in the newsletter.
-We will be discussing options with the Country Club this year on how we can both make the Waverly golfing experience better for everybody.
To conclude, the Pro Shop has started a Facebook page and will have several news items on the website.
We are emphasizing on-line tee times and e-mail. Giving us your e-mail will let you know about special events and special sales. Even occasional golfers will be able to receive e-mails on coupons on golf specials and merchandise sales. It should move us into the next level of service.
As always, give me a call (352-6263) if you want to talk regarding anything about the golf course operations. If you want to book an event, call the PGA Pro at 352-1530.

News from the Superintendent
The 2010 Golf season will be a very exciting one with the anticipation of the opening of our two new holes. After the cold and snow from the long winter of 09/10 is gone and spring arrives we will reevaluate turf conditions on the new holes and determine an approximate opening date. Some work will need to be accomplished to prepare for our grand opening such as extensive bunker maintenance, seeding and sodding some bare spots, mowing and applying weed prevention to the natural fescue areas and spraying the tall fescue contaminated fairways. The removal of the silt fence, installing tee signs and determining the out of bounds lines is planned to be completed before the opening date. The excess gravel on the edges of the asphalt cart paths will need to be removed backfilled and seeded. This process will require a lot of man hours and is not anticipated to be completed by the opening date.
Ten trees were planted on the new holes last fall with twelve more to be planted in 2010. An Amur Maple was planted in front of the right side of 5 green and a Spruce was planted by 10 green replacing the large Spruce that we lost last year. A big THANK YOU goes out to the following who donated to make this possible: The Greg Mason Family, Tab & Marge Ray, Brent & Sarah Jones, Ted & Marla Hool, Tony & Barb Lutz, Larry & Shannon VanDaalen and Dan & Cindy Freiburger.
A tree inventory has been completed for all 20 holes with a total of 647 trees with 35 varieties. There are a total of 408 conifers and 239 deciduous trees on the course. They include 57 Ash and 63 Scotch Pine, both of which have disease and insect threats that are predicted to wipe out these two varieties in the near future. A tree planting plan is being formulated for further plantings.
Because of cost, a decision has been made to close holes 13-14 after the new holes open. Staff is considering a small window to run a couple of 20 hole golf events prior to this closing. Once 13-14 are closed all mowing will be discontinued and the area will be allowed to go natural. Then split rail property line fence will be relocated, irrigation lines capped, irrigation heads removed and 8 trees transplanted. This will complete the land exchange agreement with the Hospital and the Golf Course.
A very successful grub control program was initiated last year eliminating Grub and Raccoon/Skunk damage to the Golf Course. This program will need to be continued for two more seasons to assure this problem is resolved.
After a long winter the staff is looking forward to seeing you on the course. If you have any questions or concerns, stop by. My welcome mat is always out.

Hi there golf fans. We are looking forward to a great 2010 season. The Golf Course should be in great shape coming out of the winter. We get to play the two new holes this year. We feel as though you will really enjoy the playability of these holes designed by Paul Miller.
We, like you, have been challenged by the economic situation we are currently in. However, the press we have been getting from the paper is not totally accurate. We are back on pace with the normal subsidy that the City of Waverly has given to maintain the quality of this fine facility. We thank the current and past City Councils for maintaining that subsidy as we feel the Golf Course is one of the many reasons that people move to Waverly—it is a quality of life issue.
Doug and I have had to make a few postponements of budgeted items as we are waiting to see how the revenues come in this fiscal year. We hope that the revenues continue to grow as they did last year. The whole hiccup was due to the flood of 2008. That is what got us all off on the subsidy – slow revenues that year and costs increased due to some of those issues.
We will continue to bring you the best we can give you in terms of service in the Pro Shop and condition of the Golf Course. We do not feel as though you will see much of a drop off. If you have any questions concerning the golf operations, please do not believe everything you read in the paper or see on TV. Come ask Doug and myself and we will help in keeping the rumor mill down to a minimum.
Now with that said—you may help us a little. Bring a friend to the Golf Course. You have a season pass or just want to take advantage of many of our specials? Bring a friend with you to the Golf Course. That is more revenue for us and that will help in the make-up of the budgeted items.
In order for you to take advantage of many of the specials that we have ran for more than four years or take advantage of the new ones - - we need your e-mail. There is a new kiosk in the Pro Shop that will allow you to give us the correct and more importantly, legible, e-mail. We have also set up facebook and twitter pages for those that are in that media. You may go to one of the following websites www.g3golf.com or www.golfwaverly.com to get those addresses.
