SOLID WASTE - Garbage

Click here for information on the City of Waverly's Special Collection Week 2007

This section includes:  Garbage / Bulky Items / Dumpster Rental / Hazardous Waste

Garbage is picked up once a week for Waverly residents and the commercial customers using garbage stickers in lieu of a dumpster.  If you are unsure as to the day your garbage is picked up, call the Public Services Division at 352-6247.

The garbage trucks start collection at 6:00 a.m. each day. Your garbage should be out by this time.

Placement of Garbage:

• Alley, if you have an alley, or
• Street curb next to your driveway, if you have no alley.
• Call Public Services at 352-6247 if you are not sure where your garbage should be placed.

Garbage Cans / Bags & Garbage Stickers:

  • Use garbage cans or bags of no more than 33-gallon capacity that weigh no more than 50 pounds each.

  • Each can or bag of no more than a 33-gallon capacity needs a garbage sticker placed on it.  (The 1st can or bag is not free.)  This is your way of paying for your garbage by volume and to encourage recycling.

  • If using a garbage can, place a garbage sticker on a top item in the can.  Several small plastic grocery bags can be placed in a garbage can with one garbage sticker placed on the top bag.  Do not overfill your garbage can.  The lid should be able to fit on top.  If you place an extra bag of garbage outside or on top of your garbage can, you will also need to place a garbage sticker on this bag(s).

  • If you choose to use an over-sized garbage can of more than 33 gallons (such as a 45-gallon container) you will need 2 garbage stickers if the can is more than 3/4 full and 1 garbage sticker if the can is less than 3/4 full.  The total weight of the over-sized container should not be more than 50 pounds.

  • If using garbage bag(s) alone, place a garbage sticker on each bag.  We suggest folding it in half around the neck of the bag, locking the sticky ends together.  This will ensure that it will stay on during cold and windy weather.  Do not wrap the tag completely around the neck of the bag, but make sure there is a "flag" from the neck of the bag.

  • Always make sure that the garbage sticker is in plain view for the garbage collectors.  If they find no garbage sticker, your garbage will not be picked up.

  • Garbage stickers can be purchased for $1.25 each at the following locations:
    o  HyVee, 1311 4th Street SW
o  Fareway, 222 West Bremer Avenue
o  Casey's General Store, 1312 West Bremer Avenue
o  Kwik Star (East), 400 East Bremer Avenue
o  Kwik Star (West), 500 West Bremer Avenue
    o  Meyer Pharmacy, 110 10th Street SW
    o  Wal-Mart, 2700 4th Street SW
o  Miller True Value, 1305 West Bremer Avenue
    o  City Hall, 200 1st Street NE

Illegal Disposal of Garbage:

Disposal of Large / Bulky Items or a Large Amount of Garbage:

Appliances, televisions, computers, monitors, printers, furniture, carpeting, tires, etc. are not picked up by the garbage truck.  You may dispose of these items by taking them to one of the following locations or by scheduling a Special Pickup (See information on Special Pickups further down on this page).  These items are then recycled by an independent recycling company.

• Waverly’s Yard Waste Site -- 1301 8th Street SE
  Located east of soccer complex.
Open during spring, summer & fall seasons.
• Street Division -- 412 1st Avenue SE
Bulky item collection site during the winter season
• Bremer County Landfill – 2049 200th Street - Phone 352-4574
Located 3 miles north of Hwy. 3 on Hwy. 63 & then ½ mile west or left onto 200th Street.
  Open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

If you are unsure as to the proper disposal of an item, call Public Services at 352-6247.

Each large/bulky item which cannot be picked up by the garbage truck has a separate fee as listed below.  Also shown below is the Bremer County Landfill charge if you wish to take your items directly to the Bremer County Landfill.

Bremer County Landfill:

If you choose to take your garbage or any bulky items or construction material directly to the Bremer County Landfill, please tarp all contents that are placed in an open pickup truck to prevent loss of material.  Any load that is not tarped and contained will be turned away or charged an additional fee of $4.00.  This includes individual items such as a refrigerator.  The Bremer County Landfill does not accept any yard waste, brush or trees.

Special Pickup Service for Large/Bulky Items:

The City does provide a Special Pickup Service of large/bulky items at a charge of $20 per load at any time during the year.  (See Yard Waste Section for Special Pickup of yard waste.)  Landfill fees for the large/bulky items will be an additional charge.  The item(s) scheduled for a Special Pickup will need to be placed at your curb.  Listed below is an example of charges for a Special Pickup.  Call 352-6247 if you have any questions or if you would like to schedule a Special Pickup.

 Example:

   Refrigerator $  15.00
   Television     10.00
   Special Pickup Charge    20.00
       Total Charge  $ 45.00

Special Collection Week:

One week is scheduled in the spring of each year for the removal of large/bulky items placed at the curb of Waverly residents.  During this week, the $20 Special Pickup fee is waived, but each resident does need to pay the landfill charges listed under the above "Bulky Item Charges" table.  This payment needs to be made in City Hall at the Public Works Administration office prior to this Special Collection Week.  Yard Waste is also picked up during this week and the following week.

The Special Collection Week for 2007 is scheduled for April 30 - May 4 (large/bulky items and yard waste & brush).  The 2nd week of May (7-11) is scheduled for just yard waste and brush.  Please see further details in the attached  Special Collection Week 2007 article.  Reminder:  Biodegradable bags are required for yard waste collection.
