Answer: The Leisure Services Department is comprised of 7 Divisions.  They are: Administrative, Parks,  Golf Course, Pro Shop, Civic Center, Swimming Pool, and Harlington Cemetery.  The main office is located at City Hall, 200 1st St. N.E.  Hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.  Call 352-6263 with any questions you may have.

Question: Who do I call to report a walk that has not been shoveled after a snowstorm?
Answer: We follow State Code on this matter.  You can call the Leisure Services Department to report sidewalks that have not been cleared of ice and snow within a reasonable length of time after a snowstorm.  A certified letter is sent to the property owner giving them a timeline in which to take care of removal.  If the property owner does not do this in the specified time period, City staff takes care of it and the owner is invoiced.  You can call 352-6263 with concerns.

Question: Where can I ice skate in Waverly?
Answer: The Leisure Services Department maintains 1 ice rink within the City.  It is located at Pelikan Park just off Cedar Lane in Northwest Waverly, which is skate at your own risk.  If ice is too soft for skating at that rink, a sign will be posted at the entrance.  Call 352-6263 for more information.

Question: Who do I call about a dead, dangerous, storm damaged, or dying tree?
Answer: If your tree is located between the curb and sidewalk or 10 ft. or less from the curb if you don't have a sidewalk, you need to call Waverly Leisure Services at 352-6263.  The Parks Superintendent will physically examine the tree and determine what needs to be done to take care of the problem and whose responsibility it is.  He will then visit with the homeowner about the situation.  If your tree has power lines above it, you will need to call Waverly Light and Power at 352-6251.

Question: Who do I call about a lawn that has tall grass or weeds in it?
Answer: We follow City Code on this issue.  The Leisure Services Department takes calls from concerned individuals about grass that is over 1' tall or weeds that are on a property that has not been properly maintained.  A certified letter is sent to both the property owner and the occupant.  A timeline is given for the situation to be remedied.  If it is not, the Parks staff or a private contractor mows the area and the property owner is billed accordingly.  Refer to City Code link http://city.waverlyia.com/docs/HEALTH-&.pdf (Chapter 64).  If you have concerns, please call the office at 352-6263.

Question: The Library building includes a striking design including a high central area. Why was that provided?
Answer:

The present building took advantage of portions of the existing structure on the site and reused the footings that supported a high ceiling.  The steel columns provide support for the standing seam steel roof.  Standing seam steel roofing is planned to last 80 years.

The slope of the steel roofing sheds rain and snow well.  "No flat roof" said George Miller, member of the planning and building committee and former member of the library board of trustees.

The HVAC (Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning system) was planned to minimize energy use due to the high ceiling area.  The upper space is "dead" air.

The height doe not allow for the addition of a second story.  A second story would entail staffing increases as well as specific details such as an elevator to meet the care, comfort and convenience needs of patrons according to the ADA.

Natural light and a spacious feel to the building were advantages to the cupola design.

"The high ceiling made the library a place for spirits to soar."  according to Linda Podhajsky, member of the planning committee and the library board of trustees.

Question: Meeting Rooms? How do I find out about using one?
Answer:

Contact the Circulation Desk for details about the seven rooms available during hours the library is normally staffed only.  Capacities vary from 100 to 4 persons.  An electronic videoconferencing room is availabe to educational and non profit organizations.  (319)352-1223 or waverly@waverly.lib.ia.us

Question: Is GED or ABE credit possible at the Library?
Answer: Hawkeye Community College provides GED and ABE credits through meetings held at Waverly Public Library.  Contact the Library (319)352-1223 or waverly@waverly.lib.ia.us for details.

Question: Public access to the Internet?
Answer:

There are 20 public access workstations at the Library with access to the Internet at T1 through fiberoptics.

Patrons with a current Waverly Public Library card in good standing may check out a computer for use in the building.

Plugging in your personal equipment to the Library network is not possible.

Use of personal laptops is possible on batteries or with power plugged in.

Question: Who maintains the Waverly Public Library Building and Grounds?
Answer: This 3.5 acres in the heart of Waverly offers 50 parking places along with 86 trees, pleasantly mowed grassy areas, and the Library Gardens.  Library staff does basic site maintenance including parking lots, sidewalks, grass and trees plus some work on Gardens.  Citywide cooperative agreements mean Parks and Recreation personnel do basic mowing while Library Stafff does the detail work.  Public Works personnel work with Parks and Recreation and Library staff to do snow removal.  This keeps the purchase and maintenance of equipment and the training for operation of the same to a minimum for the city.  Volunteers maintain the Library Gardens.  Questions may be directed to the Library at (319)352-1223, where they will be answered directly or sent on to the Building and Grounds staff or the Building and Grounds Committee of the Board of Trustees.

Question: Who can use Waverly Public Library?
Answer:

Waverly PL is open to all.  For Iowa residents, obtain a card by coming to the Library, with identification such as driver's license or with a parent or guardian for children, and completing an application.  For non-residents, temporary cards are possible or the out-of-state or out-of-country card for computer or microfilm or meeting room access can be used.  You'll be welcome!
