Burr Oak - 1930's
This Bur Oak, originally part of the heavy timber known as the Big Woods, was approximately 50 years old when Waverly began to develop in the early 1850's. The first industries in Waverly, many dependent on water power, were built in this vicinity along the Cedar River and included the city's first saw mill (1853), the Harmon Grist Mill (1854), and the Waverly Woolen Mill (1861). By 1885, a blacksmith had located on the west side of First Street to the north of the Bur Oak. Waverly's first firehouse was built around 1890 just to the southwest of this site.
A feed mill, Waverly Produce, was first built immediately next to the Bur Oak in the early 1890's. Various feed mills operated in this same location for the next 100 years. The Waverly Feed Mill was razed in 1991 to build the Waverly Civic Center/City Hall.
This Bur Oak stands as a symbol of Waverly's rich heritage and hope for the future.
